From MK1 to Mortal Kombat 1: a new journey begins

It’s official! The Mortal Kombat universe is going back to square one! The latest installment named Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19th on  Xbox series X/S, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. The announcement trailer dropped recently, showcasing a new and reborn universe after the events of MK11 and the Aftermath DLC, so let’s dive right in! (Spoilers for the previous games, DUH!)

So what happened in Mortal Kombat 11?

To make a long story short: In the most recent game, Kronika, the keeper of time, wanted to rewrite history and create a new era in which Raiden, the protector of Earthrealm, wouldn’t exist. Most of the campaign consisted of the hunt for the Crown of Souls that would allow her to do so. The past versions of our favorite characters such as Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Jax and Sonya Blade work together with their present versions to stop Kronika, who enlists the help of Shao Khan and the cybernetic Lin Kuei warriors.

During the game, the corrupted version of Liu Kang battles Raiden, but instead of one defeating the other, they merge and thus the Fire God Liu Kang is born. Our heroes arrive at the Keep, where Kronika attempts to reset the timeline and eventually stop her.

The Aftermath expansion

After the events of MK11 base game, we experience the Aftermath where Shang Tsung returns. After a couple of usual betrayals, Liu Kang must now fight Shang Tsung in the final battle, which has two different outcomes depending on whose side you’re on. We all expected one of these new realities to be the basis for the next installment of the MK franchise, and now with the new trailer we can safely assume that the story will be set in the era of Liu Kang!

The Aftermath expansion ends with Liu Kang meeting the first Kung Lao, who also happened to be the first Earthrealm warrior to fight Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat tournament, defeating him and ensuring Earthrealms survival.

This battle took place 500 years before the first game. So we can expect the Netherrealm studios will gently reset the lore of the universe by completely rebooting the timeline while retelling the classic stories with new twists and interpretations.

So what happens in the trailer?

The trailer features many characters without whom the game just wouldn’t feel like Mortal Kombat. It starts with Raiden and Kung Lao training and shortly after switches to Mileena and Kitana shortly after. In the next scene, our personal favorites Scorpion and Sub-Zero come face to face looking like they’re about to fight, but Liu Kang’s narration hints that a brotherhood may be forming. All the warriors see the same red eclipse in the sky, while Liu Kang teases that a storm is brewing, then descends from the sky alongside Kung Lao and Raiden.

If you thought we’d seen the last of Shang Tsung, you were wrong, as we see him emerge through a portal in the scene. Then the trailer cuts forward to the part where Shang Tsung fights and kills many of the characters in extremely gory ways – as per tradition of MK – and gets back to stealing souls. But Liu Kang doesn’t let him get away with it, as he defeats Shang Tsung with his powers.

The trailer didn’t show Johnny, Sonya, Cassie and Jax, so we don’t know for sure if they’ll be in the base game – we don’t even know the time in which this game is set, so they might not even be born yet. But considering all the time manipulation events that have taken place recently, we have no doubt whatsoever that we’ll see them again.

We don’t know many details about the story in this new Liu Kang era yet, but it’s for sure that we’re in for quite a spectacular and gory storyline, something that every MK fan is very excited about. Tell us in the comments what do you think about the new game!
