Minecraft Monday: Best Minecraft Enchantments & How To Get Them

Welcome back to Ganiming, it’s time for another Minecraft Monday! After covering all the best mods, seeds, and builds you must include in your server, you are now ready to get started! Today we will be covering everything related to enchanting. We will check out the best Minecraft enchantments for every piece of gear in the game and also show you the best possible way to acquire them.

Quick note: everything I will show you today was built by me and 2 of my friends. We were using the Minecraft Realms feature which does not allow mods, so everything is vanilla. Everything on this server was built just before the cave update, which means version 1.17. We recently started playing on this Realm again, and we are currently in the process of updating the world with all the recent additions. Even though the world is quite old, all the ways of acquiring the best Minecraft enchantments still work to this day.

Let’s get started with the best Minecraft enchantments that will help you survive in the dangerous world of Minecraft.

There are 3 ways you can get minecraft enchantments

Enchanting Table

The first and the most obvious way to get enchantments is by using the enchanting table. This is a block, that uses experience and lapis lazuli to enchant tools, weapons, armor, and books.

The enchanting table gets stronger the more bookshelves you place around it. To achieve maximum power of your enchantments, you will need to place 30 bookshelves in a square around it, just like in the picture below.

This is usually not my favorite of getting the enchantments I need, as the process can feel very rng like. You also use up a ton of lapis lazuli, books, and experience to enchant the books or your gear with the enchantments you usually won’t need. If I use this method, I usually enchant the books and then use the books to enchant my gear. This way I ensure that I get the exact enchantments I need on my gear.

There is always a chance you get a fully enchanted piece of gear if you do use the enchanting table, but I prefer consistency over lucky rolls.

Villager Trading

My favorite way to get the best Minecraft enchantments is by doing trades with the villagers. It requires some setting up, but it’s worth it. Check out our best Minecraft builds to see how you set up your villager trading districts!

Essentially you need to kidnap a villager and make him your ‘unpaid intern’. It’s not as hard as it might seem at first. Simply walk up to a villager that has no profession, drop a boat in front of him, and make him get in. Once that happens, take him to a secluded area, and completely surround him so he can not escape. Destroy the boat and place a lectern next to him. The villager will assume the profession of a librarian and get a chance to sell enchanted books.

If you don’t like what the villager is offering, simply destroy the lectern, wait for him to lose the profession, and place it again. This will reset the villager’s inventory, as long as you didn’t trade with him yet. When you are happy with the enchantment he is offering, simply buy it. Make sure the enchantment you are looking for is the max level possible. Trading with him will also assure you lock his trades, which means you can buy more of the same enchantment from him anytime you want.

This method of acquiring the best Minecraft enchantments for your gear does take some setting up, as you need books and a ton of emeralds. But that shouldn’t be too hard to get if you already set up your villager trading district.

Finding the Best Minecraft Enchantments In the World

The Minecraft world is full of places you can explore and get great loot. Among that loot, you can sometimes find already enchanted gear or enchanted books. This is a fun way of upgrading your gear, but it is very inconsistent and time-consuming.

You can explore randomly generated structures, examples of which are the Desert Temple and the Nether Fortress, but you can also go fishing! If you have the Luck of the sea III enchantment on your fishing rod, you can find some interesting loot, including enchanted gear and books! This method can be fun as it is a minigame inside of the full game, but it is rarely worth doing just because of the loot.

How Do I Use the Enchanted Books?

Once you get all the books with the best Minecraft enchantments, it’s time to apply them to your gear. All you need is the piece of gear you wish to enchant, the book with your enchantment, some experience, and an anvil. You simply place both your gear and the book on the anvil, and your gear will be upgraded! You can do this as many times as you wish, as long as you have enough experience to do the enchanting.

Enchantments

As you already know, enchantments buff up your gear, weapons, and armor! But not every enchantment can be applied to every piece of gear. Here I will show you my personal preferences on how I enchant my gear when I play Minecraft! Hopefully, this will help you out next time you have to enchant your gear in a new server! Some of the best Minecraft enchantments are the ones you can use on a lot of different items, so keep an eye on them!

Helmet

Let’s start out with our armor, first up is the helmet! I usually create a few helmets on my servers, so I can be prepared for any situation the game throws at me. This is what I usually use:

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Protection IV – General protection against attacks, fire, lava, and falling (not compatible with Fire/Blast Protection)

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor

These three are the general 3 enchantments I use on ALL my armor pieces. You could make the argument for swapping out Protection for Fire/Blast Protection, but the all-around aspect of regular Protection is just too good for me. With these three enchantments, I never have to worry about dying or my armor breaking. Here are some more situational enchantments for your helmets you can use:

Aqua Affinity I – Speeds up how fast you can mine blocks underwater

Respiration III – Extends underwater breathing (see better underwater)

Thorns III – Causes damage to attackers

Thorns is usually always used on all your armor pieces, as it reflects the damage others do to you. But I rarely use it because I prefer range weapons, and regular mobs rarely get to touch me. I usually put it only on my chestplate, but you can easily put it on all of your armor pieces.

Chestplate

The same standard enchantments I use on all of my armor pieces.

Thorns III – Causes damage to attackers

Leggings

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Protection IV – General protection against attacks, fire, lava, and falling (not compatible with Fire/Blast Protection)

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor

The same standard enchantments I use on all my standard pieces, but you can add some enchantments unique to leggings:

Swift sneak III – Increases movement speed while sneaking

Boots

The same standard enchantments I use on all of my boots, with the addition of feather falling.

Feather Falling IV – Reduces fall and teleportation damage

Boots have some unique enchantments you can use to prepare yourself for different situations.

Depth Strider III – Speeds up how fast you can move underwater

Frost Walker II – Freezes water into ice so that you can walk on it (and allows you to walk on magma blocks without taking damage)

Soul Speed III – Speeds up how fast you can move across soul sand and soul soil

Tools (Pickaxe, Axe, Shovel, Hoe)

We finally made it to the tools! I will sum up the tool enchantments in one go, as there are very few unique enchantments for all of them. The basic setup I use for all my tools:

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Efficiency V – Increases how fast you can mine

Fortune III – Increases block drops from mining

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor

You can’t go wrong using these 4 enchantments on all your tools. I usually also make a second pickaxe in my playthroughs with Silk Touch instead of Fortune.

Silk Touch – Mines blocks themselves (fragile items)

The Sword

The sword is your main melee weapon in the whole game. You can put some unique enchantments on it with the standard ones and no one will be able to stand up to you.

Sharpness V – Increases attack damage dealt to mobs (can also be applied to the axe)

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Sweeping Edge – Increases the damage of a sweep attack

Looting III – Increases the amount of loot dropped when a mob is killed

Knockback II – Increases knockback dealt (enemies repel backwards)

Fire Aspect II – Sets target on fire

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor

There are some unique enchantments you can put on both your sword and axe, but I rarely get around to using them:

Bane of Arthropods V – Increases attack damage against arthropods

Smite V – Increases attack damage against undead mobs

The Trident

The Trident is a melee weapon that you can acquire by killing a drowned mob that has a trident. The drop rate is very low, so you might have to go on quite a killing spree to get it but is definitely worth it.

Channeling I – Summons a lightning bolt at a targeted mob when the enchanted item is thrown (targeted mob must be standing in raining)

Impaling V – Increases attack damage against sea creatures

Loyalty III – Returns your weapon when it is thrown like a spear

Riptide III – Propels the player forward when the enchanted item is thrown while in water or rain

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor

The Bow

The bow is my most used weapon in the game. I always have it on hand, no matter where I go. It is still my favorite weapon, even with crossbows in the game. The only problem is you can’t run infinity and mending at the same time, so you are forced to choose. This is my usual setup:

Power V – Increases damage dealt by bow

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Punch II – Increases knockback dealt (enemies repel backwards)

Flame I – Turns arrows into flaming arrows

Infinity – You never run out of arrows, as long as you have at least one in your inventory (incompatible with Mending)

The Crossbow

Crossbow is the preferred weapon of pillagers in Minecraft. You can not craft it by yourself, you have to loot it from a pillager. It has some unique enchantments for it and offers a bit more crowd control than the bow, but I rarely have it in my inventory. My usual setup is:

Piercing IV – Arrow can pierce through multiple entities

Quick Charge III – Reduces the amount of time to reload a crossbow

Multishot – Shoots 3 arrows at once but only costs 1 arrow (incompatible with Piercing)

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor

The Fishing Rod

The fishing rod is the final of all items I usually enchant. Normally I only use it to catch fish if I really need the food and there are no actual fish I can beat to death with my axe. But it’s still nice to have it fully enchanted, you never know when you’ll need it.

Unbreaking III – Increases the durability of an item, in effect, by decreasing the chance of the tool, weapon, or armor taking durability damage when used

Luck of the Sea III – Increases chances of catching valuable items

Lure II – Increases the rate of fish biting your hook

Mending – Uses experience to repair your tools, weapons, and armor
